Shoo Academy

Taking your first steps to an exciting career

It can often seem like a bit of a puzzle. You’re trying to secure your first step on the career ladder and you have bags of talent, enthusiasm and ambition. You have great academic credentials and a brilliant university degree, but the one thing you don’t have is work experience.

Without it, many recruitment departments can be reluctant to give you the opportunity you need to shine. How do you get experience if no one will give you a chance?

"SHOO Social Media have been an incredible support to our students at Leeds Beckett over the past five years. Chris and Rachel have been mentors, regularly lecture on a second year media module and have been regular guests on Q&A panels and industry led workshops.

Their advice has been invaluable and has enabled many of our students to develop a deeper understanding of digital marketing informing their career decisions as they consider their career choices after graduation.

Most valuable has been the SHOO academy – an opportunity provided by Rachel and Chris for our students to engage in real life business projects with Shoo that enables them to gain professional experience and develop vital skills for entering the graduate job market. Rachel and Chris are always happy to engage in our activities and are a real pleasure to work with"

GREAT PEOPLE, GREAT PLACE

Is it just about making tea and tidying up?

We’ve all heard horror stories about terrible internships where all you do is make the drinks. If you’re only taking care of menial stuff then it’s likely you’re wasting your time. Don’t spend a few months of your life watching the clock and wishing you were somewhere else.

"I just wanted to send you both an email to thank you for giving me the experience and opportunity to be a part of your wonderful business. You have given me the knowledge and confidence to pursue a master's degree at the University of Leeds in Marketing. Without the experience at Shoo, I would never have known it was a future career I wanted to go into.

You have a kind and positive environment in the office which always made me feel welcome and excited to come back each week.

Good luck in your future endeavours and hopefully I will come across the both of you once I have begun my marketing journey.

Thank you also to the rest of the team! They were all so lovely and welcoming. An experience I won’t ever forget."

SHOO Academy member 2021-2022

The SHOO Academy is different.

Students and graduates who have worked as interns at Shoo Media have helped with a wide range of tasks.

These have included posting social media content, creating graphics and learning how to use different creative software.

They’ve worked alongside designers, writers and other senior professionals to deliver for Shoo Media clients.

They’ve become valued members of a dynamic team, committed to getting the best out of one another.

"I have been working alongside Rachel and Chris since 2018 and this has proved to be a fantastic partnership for Leeds Beckett University and specifically our Media, Communication and Cultures students.

Rachel has been teaching on Media Professionals Workshop, a second year employability module, for a number of years. Rachel's knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication is second to none and the students have consistently outperformed as a result of her tutorship. Rachel has always been extremely professional and has gone above and beyond to develop the students by providing additional opportunities and guidance following the conclusion of the module.

The creation of the Shoo Academy showcases Rachel's dedication to learning, teaching, and mentoring as this provides an important space where students can garner 'real-world' industry experience. Shoo have been an exceptional industry contact for us and have played a major role in enhancing the student experience over the past few years.

Rachel and Chris, and Shoo as an organisation, come highly recommended from everyone connected to the Media degree at Leeds Beckett University".
